Laura Ashworth

writing since 2019

I signed the lease before I had a business plan, honestly.

Laura Ashworth opened Grit Blend Zone in the spring of 2019 after seven years coaching at a large commercial gym where the programming was decided by a head office in another prefecture and changed every quarter based on what was trending on fitness Instagram. She had been quietly building her own programming for the members she trained personally, keeping a notebook of what actually worked over time, what movements caused the most unnecessary soreness without payoff, and which combinations of strength and conditioning left people feeling capable rather than wrecked. When the lease on a former auto-parts warehouse became available, she signed it before she had a business plan.

The first six months were genuinely rough. The HVAC was inadequate, the floor was still concrete when the first class ran, and Laura was coaching every session herself while also ordering equipment in batches as cash allowed. The rubber flooring went down in November 2019, the rig arrived in January 2020, and then March 2020 happened. The gym pivoted to online programming almost overnight, and the members who stuck around during that period are still regulars today. That stretch taught Laura more about what people actually need from a gym than any coaching certification had. They need consistency, clear communication, and someone who remembers that they have a job and a family and a bad knee from 2014.

Laura Ashworth has been coaching strength and conditioning since 2012, starting at a large commercial gym where she spent seven years before opening Grit Blend Zone in 2019. She holds a CSCS certification and has completed additional coursework in movement screening and return-to-sport programming. She writes the weekly training program herself, coaches the morning classes most days, and keeps a running notebook of what works and what does not. She is currently working through a slow re-read of Stuart McGill's work on spine mechanics, which is influencing the hip hinge progressions in the current programming cycle. Outside the gym, she runs long and slow on weekend mornings and is deeply committed to a good cup of coffee before any of that happens.
